Got Questions?
Finding a local church you can partner with can be a long and frustrating journey. At Anchorage Wesleyan Church (AWC) we want to make
this decision a little easier for you by answering some of the common questions we are asked.
A Several Reasons:
- As a recent church plant we are able to focus on the essentials of the Christian
faith and community. Some traditions are healthy, but we have the opportunity to
establish some new traditions that will be healthy for our generation. We struggle
daily with what it means to be a Christian in our context - you won't be taught a
series of cliches!
- As a new church we are able to offer a small synergistic community where our
spiritual lives can thrive in a significant way - your journey matters to us!
- As an intimate community that cares deeply for its members you will experience
others sacrificing their own rights, privileges, and resources in order to help
meet your needs. We expect this atmosphere to impact your life - your lifestyle
will change!
- you can expect authentic friendships to form at AWC. We will work side by
side, celebrate success together, suffer through trials as family, and seek the
heart of Christ in unity as we speak the truth in love to one another.
A Friendships are a key part of our lives, and at AWC our
gatherings are built around the goal of developing deep authentic relationships and have
a time and place where you can learn and live the Scriptures. Everyone feels awkward when
entering a new group - that is just how life works, but we encourage you to risk it and
introduce yourself.
A Money can cause all sorts of tension within families,
including church families and so we are very careful about how we approach this issue.
- We do not pass an offering plate or bag during the worship service so that our guests
and others don't feel obligated to give simply because others are doing it.
- On the table in the back of the sanctuary doors you will find a wooden box If you want a cash
gift to be included on your end of the year giving statement please be sure to use an envelope.
We consider giving the secret privilege of the believer.
- In our desire to teach the whole counsel of God we will, at lease once a year, teach on
tithing. Jesus spoke more about money than any other subject and we all understand the truth
of the passage "where your treasure is, there your heart will be also" (Matthew 6:21). We
simply want to give everyone all the information they need to make informed decisions about
this and every other subject.
A The Wesleyan church is a branch of the Methodist church that
split away during the time of the Civil War as the main body of the Methodist church supported
slavery. It is named after John Wesley, who was a priest in the Church of England during the
late 1700's and was the most influential church leader of his day. John Wesley is a highly
respected follower of Christ across most denominational lines around the world. Our faith is
not in John Wesley, we simply hold him up as a good example of what it means to be a follower
of Christ. Further information regarding the Wesleyan Church is available on the information
table.
